The elders and deacons of the church of Christ are selected based on biblical requirements. They are not voted into the position but are chosen and brought before the congregation for their consideration. The members are then free to comment to the elders regarding their choice. The individual is then appointed (or not) by the existing elders to serve either as a deacon or as an elder. If at any time the elders feel that the individual isn't living up to the standards set forth in the New Testament, the elders have the authority to revoke the position.
The elders are the shepherds of the congregation. It is their duty to uphold the teachings of the Bible and lead a life that is in accordance with the teachings found in Titus 1:5-9, 1 Tim. 3:1-7 & 5:17, and Acts 20:28. The deacons assist the elders in shepherding the flock. They must lead a righteous life and meet the requirements outlined in 1 Tim. 3:8-13.
Our ministers are chosen and appointed by the elders to preach and teach the Word as was commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ in Matt. 28:19-20.
